This lovely chap was inspired by a cheetah on a medieval Syrian bowl, the "Baptistère de Saint-Louis" held in the Louvre. He forms part of a frieze of animals running round the rim, and I thought he deserved a little more space of his own.

A couple of badgers live in the woods near my house and I sometimes catch a glimpse of one coming home at night. I have re-imagined this one enjoying springtime.

These lovely chaps are based on a series of roundels from an 11th-century carved ivory horn, known as an Oliphant, held in the V& museum. Some of the beasts are not easily identifiable and I was drawn to their slightly fantastical, whimsical nature. I feel relief carving and lino printing are suited to the same bold simplicity of design, the process for making them being somewhat similar; in effect you ‘carve’ a lino sheet to create a relief design which is then printed. This print was hand burnished on a very thin Japanese paper which has a slightly translucent quality, much like very thin parchment, and which takes the ink very well creating a lovely dense black.

I first saw a polar bear many years ago at Edinburgh Zoo and have been in love ever since. Edinburgh's bear, Mercedes, was rescued from her native Canada after she was scheduled to be shot, having roamed into a nearby town in search of food. She is the inspiration for this print.

Living in the countryside, I am lucky enough to have seen these beautiful, elusive creatures in their natural habitat, mostly at twilight near the woods where I walk my dog. This print was made using two linocut 'plates'; one for the rusty red colour, and one for the black outline.

I was inspired to make a fox print having seen a fox very recently at close quarters at the foot of Hallin fell, near Ullswater. He was rooting around in the bracken, and I had time to admire his beautifully expressive long face before he spotted me and hurried off. The inspiration for the composition of the print came from a 14th-century metal basin held in the Louvre; the ‘Baptistère de Saint Louis’. A series of animals including cheetahs, camels and unicorns as well as foxes form a frieze, chasing each other around the rim and the base of the bowl. I have placed my printed fox pair within a minimalist bramble thicket to provide a setting and border, inspired by the illuminated borders of medieval manuscripts.

This is another medieval-inspired print. People in the medieval period often took a dim view of owls. Their tendency to hunt at night and make homes in churchyards led to their criminalisation by preachers who used them as metaphors for sinners; shunning the light and finding refuge in dark places. However, this did not stop medieval artists from producing beautiful images of very individual owls. In ‘Hoot’ I try to emulate the sense of personality that medieval artists gave their avian subjects.

This little owl was inspired by the many characterful owls found in medieval manuscripts. My personal favourite is the owl from the Meermanno bestiary who looks like he may have overdosed on coffee (Museum Meermanno, MMW, 10 B 25, Folio 32v). My owl is printed in a very dark prussian blue (he may appear black on your computer screen but he is in fact a very deep blue).

The Griffin is a mythical beast made up of the front half and wings of an eagle and the hind quarters of a lion. He was popular in medieval art and heraldry, being famed for his strength. I took inspiration from many different medieval manuscripts for this fabulous beast and his foliate border. This is a Varied Edition; I use individual lino stamps for the leaves, so the number, placement and ratio of red to gold leaves will vary from print to print.

Herdwicks In The Rain
Herdwicks In The Rain

Linocut

Limited edition of 25
Image size: 60x42cm
£190 (unmounted and unframed)
Herdwicks and rain are so quintessentially Cumbrian, and are so often seen and experienced together when out for a day in the fells, that I felt they should be celebrated together on paper. Herdwicks have the art of looking perfectly content and thoroughly unperturbed in the most miserable of weather conditions (a trait shared by hardy fell-walkers!) and, unlike many breeds of sheep, they have wonderfully characterful faces. I wanted to capture their sturdy resilience as well as their individuality in this print. The bridge was inspired by Slater Bridge in Little Langdale; one of Lakeland’s old pedestrian bridges, it connects the hamlet of Little Langdale with the many slate quarries in the Tilberthwaite area. This print was hand burnished on a heavy British-made paper with a textured surface, giving a slightly mottled effect when printed which is perfect for the texture of the fleece and stones.

In medieval bestiaries cranes were often depicted holding a stone in one foot. This, like many bestiary depictions, derives from Pliny the Elder’s description of their behaviour: ‘When they rest at night they have sentries who hold a stone in their claw; if a sentry begins to fall asleep the stone falls and wakes him. All the other birds sleep with their head under their wing, except for the leader, who keeps watch.’ (Natural History, Book 10, 30). For this watchful sentry I took inspiration from many different manuscript illustrations.

Gringolet is Sir Gawain's horse from Arthurian legend. He is noted as being a good charger with distinctive ears. I looked at many images of horses from medieval manuscripts before working on Gringolet; taking the best of each in order to create the ultimate noble steed.

I wanted to create a Herdwick print for every season. I thought my earlier ‘Herdwicks in the Rain’ covers Spring, Summer, and Autumn so this is my Winter edition! This print was made using two lino ‘plates’; one for the slate blue colour and one for the black outline, both were hand-burnished to create a slightly mottled texture.
